Patton Boggs Attorney Melodi Gates Appointed to U.S. Homeland Security Data Privacy and Integrity Advisory Committee

DENVER, June 28, 2012—Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano has appointed Melodi M. Gates, an attorney with the Denver office of Patton Boggs LLP, to serve on the Data Privacy and Integrity Advisory Committee of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Ms. Gates will serve as Special Government Employee through January 2015.
Ms. Gates has a keen understanding of the needs of business and the federal government with respect to homeland security measures. At Patton Boggs, she helps businesses balance the requirements of effective data security and efficient business operations in such key areas as data privacy, cybersecurity and regulatory compliance.
Ms. Gates also works with clients to identify the causes and implications of security breaches, assisting a range of organizations in the development of sound, proactive information security policy designed to prevent such events. Prior to joining Patton Boggs, Ms. Gates worked in telecommunications and information technology for more than 20 years.

The Data Privacy and Integrity Advisory Committee advises the Department of Homeland Security on issues related to personal privacy, data integrity and the protection of personal information, providing programmatic, administrative and technical support to the department.
Led by Chief Privacy Officer Mary Ellen Callahan, the committee was established in April 2004 and comprises leaders in higher education, law and commerce who specialize in the fields of data protection, privacy, interoperability and emerging technologies.
