Practice Areas :
Litigation and Dispute Resolution
Patton Boggs’ litigation practice focuses on four core areas – government disputes and investigations, international litigation, complex financial disputes, and claims relating to mass torts, product liability, and environmental impacts. Our experienced litigation team excels in the courtroom and also works with members of the firm’s other practice groups to combine litigation strategies with creative public policy or business strategies.
Government Investigations and Litigation
Our experience working both with (and within) various government agencies, as well as with other branches of government, enables us to seek an array of solutions to a client’s government disputes, particularly when that client requires more than conventional resolution strategies. Our attorneys include more than 100 veterans of government service, including former U.S. Attorneys, Assistant U.S. Attorneys, and staff of at least 18 other government departments and agencies. As a result, we are able to combine an extensive knowledge of the relevant legal standards and procedures with deep insight into how government decisions are made.
We handle white-collar criminal matters, challenges to administrative and regulatory decisions, fraud and false claim matters, government contract disputes, and other commercial disputes involving the government. We represent clients in government investigations of all kinds, and our experience with congressional investigations is second to none.
International Disputes
Patton Boggs has decades of experience representing clients in domestic and international courts, and in arbitration and other fora for alternative dispute resolution. Our practice includes representation of foreign governments, government-sponsored enterprises, and corporations in commercial disputes with U.S. and multinational corporations, as well as representation of U.S. corporations against foreign companies, sovereigns and instrumentalities.
We also handle disputes relating to international trade and have extensive proficiency in coordinating litigation strategies that require legal action in multiple jurisdictions. In all of these matters, we bring a broad network of international contacts and a wealth of resources as the nation’s premier public policy firm, a position which enables us to espouse a creative, multi-disciplinary approach that is most likely to achieve our client’s ultimate goals in the international arena.
Complex Financial and Commercial Disputes
Patton Boggs has exceptional capabilities when dealing with disputes arising from complex contract, financial, and other business transactions. We handle high-value disputes involving financing transactions and other business ventures, including securities litigation, loan recovery, lender priority and bankruptcy/restructuring matters, and regulatory oversight.
We regularly team with members of our business group in order to offer first-rate representation to banks, hedge funds and private equity entities, multinational corporations, lenders, nonprofit organizations, Small Business Investment Companies (SBICs), underwriters, and other investment-related entities. Our attorneys also advise clients on business disputes including matters involving civil and criminal fraud, professional negligence, international business, technology, and intellectual property. (See the Intellectual Property section of our web site for a full description of our intellectual property capabilities.)
Mass Torts, Product Liability, and Environmental Impact Litigation
Patton Boggs has a broad-based and geographically diverse practice group that is especially skilled in litigation involving mass torts, product liability, and other disputes arising from events causing environmental and industrial impacts. Our attorneys have particular experience in coordinating national defense efforts for our clients in numerous high profile cases, including the World Trade Center disaster site litigation, Agent Orange litigation, diethylstilbestrol (DES) litigation, alcohol litigation, and all-terrain vehicle (ATV) litigation.
We handle a wide variety of insurance coverage disputes arising out of mass tort, product liability, and director/officer liability issues. We also have substantial experience representing clients in disputes with the government and private litigants over compliance with environmental laws and regulations.
