Using the attorney’s fees earned from a successful pro bono case won by John Oberdorfer, the firm established the Patton Boggs Foundation to commemorate the retirement of founding partner James R. Patton, Jr. The Foundation annually grants a Public Policy Fellowship to exceptional law students who spend their summers working on public policy matters for either a non-profit institution or a government agency.
By making this Fellowship available, the Foundation embodies the firm’s commitment to creating new and valuable opportunities in the public policy field for tomorrow’s attorneys.
The PB Foundation is endowed through additional contributions from a second pro bono win (by Rick Talisman), and contributions by individual partners and friends of the firm. Its main focus continues to be the Fellowship program through which it creates new and valuable opportunities for law students interested in the field of public policy.
The reach of the PB Foundation is expanding, with several new initiatives focused on attracting and finding law students, as well as generating funds to support them.

Washington, DC, June 17, 2010— The Patton Boggs Foundation featured former World Bank President James Wolfensohn on June 8, 2010, as the guest speaker for its fifth “Issues of Our Time” lecture.
Mr. Wolfensohn, a leading authority on global issues, presented his vision for the world’s economic future over the course of the next four decades. He cited the importance of the World Bank in stabilizing the international community.
The speech drew more than 100 people, including 20 ambassadors and dozens of high-ranking embassy officials, to the law offices of Washington-based Patton Boggs LLP.
Japanese Ambassador Ichiro Fujisaki congratulated Mr. Wolfensohn on his presentation, telling the standing-room only audience that it was the “most enlightening and intriguing speech” on the topic that he had ever heard.

The PB Foundation has also established two in-house advisory committees.
Associate Advisory Committee
The Associate Advisory Committee helped establish and helps run the “Legal Issues of Our Time” lecture series and maintains contact with PB Foundation alumni.
Staff Advisory Committee
In addition to involvement by the attorneys of Patton Boggs, the Foundation is supported by the firm’s staff as well. The Foundation’s guiding principles of corporate social responsibility are held in common by all members of the firm. Monetary donations to the foundation by staff members can be designated to fund the granting of a Public Policy Fellowship to law students who are either staff members or the children of staff members.
The firm’s staff, through its support of the Foundation’s objectives and their own fund raising activities, helps foster a spirit of community within the firm and a dedication to the spirit of public service.
On March 17, 2009, the Staff Advisory Committee held a firm-wide “Wear Jeans to Work” fundraiser, raising approximately a total of $4,000 from all of the Patton Boggs’ offices.
