Catherine Buell counsels one of the largest institutional investors in the world with respect to its global private equity and real estate fund portfolio. She focuses on investments in real estate assets and private equity funds in the United States, South America and Europe. In addition, Ms. Buell advises clients on commercial real estate acquisition, disposition, land use, finance, development and leasing matters.
Ms. Buell currently serves as the Chair of the District of Columbia’s Historic Preservation Review Board (HPRB), which is responsible for preserving Washington D.C.’s historic and cultural resources. Ms. Buell is the first woman to serve as Chair of HPRB since the board’s creation. As Chair of HPRB, Ms. Buell is responsible for evaluating applications for historic designation and commercial and residential building permit applications for consistency with Washington D.C.’s preservation law.
Ms. Buell serves as a member on the board of trustees for the National Urban League, one of the nation's oldest civil rights organizations. She also serves on the board of directors of the Southwest Renaissance Development Corporation, a nonprofit corporation which seeks to promote sustainable economic development in Southwest Washington D.C. through the use of the arts, and the board of directors of the Levine School of Music.
In 2008, Ms. Buell was named ‘Young Attorney of the Year’ for her exemplary service and community work by the Washington Bar Association.
Ms. Buell served as a member of the Governor O’Malley Business and Economic Development Transition Team in 2006. Before attending law school, Ms. Buell worked for Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed as his legislative assistant in the Georgia General Assembly and his special assistant in his role as campaign manager to current Atlanta mayor Shirley Franklin.
