Judge Joseph Colaianni assists clients in a broad range of intellectual property litigation including patents, trademarks, copyrights, licensing, trade secrets and antitrust. His litigation experience often involves mechanical, electro-mechanical, electronics and chemical technology. Judge Colaianni has appeared as lead trial counsel before federal district courts and federal appellate courts throughout the United States. In addition, Judge Colaianni has applied for, and prosecuted, patent and trademark applications in the United States Patent Office and throughout the world.

Judge Colaianni was appointed to the United States Court of Federal Claims in 1970 and remained until 1984. While on the Court, his docket included several hundred patent claims. His decisions included cases such as Dynamics Corp. v. United States, 223 USPQ 1303 (Cl. Ct. 1984); Hughes Aircraft v. United States, 215 USPQ 787 (Cl. Ct. 1982); Lockheed Aircraft Corp. v. United States, 190 USPQ 134 (Cl. Ct. 1976); and General Electric v. United States, 191 USPQ 594 (Cl. Ct. 1976).

Following associations with law firms in Michigan and Ohio—including work for the Burroughs Corporation, where he was involved in patenting of the companies' inventions—he later joined the Department of Justice and defended the United States government against patent infringement claims.

Judge Colaianni also advises clients in alternative dispute resolution cases involving mediation and arbitration proceedings. He has also served as both a mediator and arbitrator in complex alternative dispute resolution proceedings. He has also successfully negotiated numerous license agreements, including patents and trademarks. Judge Colaianni has served as a patent law expert in numerous patent suits. He has also represented clients at the U.S. International Trade Commission.
