Timothy Chorba, Ambassador to Singapore from 1994 to 1997 and a member of Patton Boggs’ Public Policy and Business Law practice groups, represents domestic and international enterprises in working with the U.S. government and foreign governments to attain their business objectives. Ambassador Chorba helps clients articulate vital legislative interests and objectives on Capitol Hill and in the executive branch, and then translate those objectives into strategic, results-oriented action. Similarly, Ambassador Chorba employs his relationships around the world to solve clients’ problems. Prior to his appointment by President Clinton as Ambassador to Singapore, Ambassador Chorba had been a member of Patton Boggs since 1977.
While serving as Ambassador, Ambassador Chorba assisted U.S. multinational corporations with interests in Southeast Asia and worked to enhance the bilateral military relationship. He promoted the export of American goods and services and advanced U.S. political and economic interests. He successfully advocated Singaporean purchase of American aircraft and light rail vehicles, and was instrumental in initiating the U.S.-Singapore “Open Skies Agreement” which he signed on behalf of the United States. He also worked with Singaporean authorities to implement measures deterring production and distribution of counterfeit American software.
Today, Ambassador Chorba engages in a diverse corporate and regulatory practice, solving clients’ problems at the intersection of government, law and business. He represents U.S. multinationals doing business abroad, as well as U.S. subsidiaries of foreign multinationals. His practice includes establishing business operations in the U.S., inbound investment in manufacturing and distribution facilities, contract negotiation, product liability matters, trade regulation, facility leasing, foreign government regulation of American enterprises abroad, federal regulation of domestic business activities and corporate litigation.
Representative Matters:
- Represented the Wm. Wrigley, Jr. Company, the world’s leading manufacturer of chewing gum, in regaining access rights to the Singaporean market.
- Represented a European tool manufacturer in successfully defending against patent, trademark and trade dress complaints before the International Trade Commission.
- On behalf of Gucci, shut down counterfeiting operations in Mexico and Chile, and organized successful anti-counterfeiting initiatives in the People’s Republic of China.
- Overcame tariff and non-tariff barriers hampering the export of pet food to Colombia by a leading pet food manufacturer.
- During almost twenty-five years with Patton Boggs, has successfully represented various clients in matters involving the intersection of business, law and government in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Chile, China, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, Oman, Paraguay, Singapore, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, the United Kingdom and Uruguay.
