As a patent agent with Patton Boggs, Dell Chism applies his technical knowledge in assisting clients with complex issues involving biotechnology intellectual property. Mr. Chism’s work involves the preparation and prosecution of U.S. and foreign patent applications in the chemical, biochemical, pharmaceutical and biotechnology arts. He also assists with the preparation and research of freedom-to-operate, validity, infringement and patentability opinions.

Before joining the firm, Mr. Chism served five years as a patent examiner with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). As a primary examiner in the USPTO Biotechnology Group, he prosecuted U.S. and international patent applications to pharmaceuticals and methods of treatment, pesticides and herbicides, focusing in the areas of small peptides and proteins, enzymes and plant extracts. As a primary examiner, he also trained junior examiners and was granted full authority to issue patents in the name of the commissioner of patents.

Mr. Chism previously performed laboratory research and acquired extensive experience in the areas of medical entomology concerning toxicological control of disease vectors for malaria, Eastern Equine Encephalitis, LaCrosse Encephalitis and West Nile virus. He is well versed in all modern molecular biology techniques, having used them in the laboratory and examined them for the USPTO.
