Anurag Varma is an attorney in Patton Boggs’ International practice, where he focuses on public policy and trade matters relating to clients from, or with interests in, India.  Before joining Patton Boggs, Mr. Varma was a name partner at a general practice law firm based in Washington, D.C. where his focus was public policy and class action litigation.

Mr. Varma served as counsel to the Embassy of India to the United States between 2008 and 2010 and currently serves as public policy counsel for the Embassy of Sri Lanka to the United States.  Mr. Varma also advises corporations participating in U.S.-India trade and transactions regarding market entry and public policy issues in both countries.  In 2008, Mr. Varma served as one of the lead public policy counsel to the U.S.-India Business Council, successfully advocating for the historic passage, by the U.S. Congress, of the U.S.-India Civilian Nuclear Cooperation Initiative.  Since 2000, Mr. Varma has also served as counsel to numerous national organizations of Americans of Indian descent. 

Mr. Varma also works in Patton Boggs’ Litigation practice, where he focuses on national class action matters.

Representative Matters
  • Since 2006, Mr. Varma has represented the Asian-American Hotel Owners Association, whose membership owns and operates 40% of all hotel properties in the United States.
  • In 2007, Mr. Varma was lead public policy counsel to a grassroots organization advocating to the U.S. Congress and Administration for reform of U.S. policy on permanent residency for over 1.1 million high-skilled immigrants backlogged in the nation’s Green Card process.
  • In 2006, Mr. Varma was lead counsel to a coalition of Indian-American organizations and individuals working in support of the successful passage of the first U.S. law directed towards U.S.-India Civil Nuclear Cooperation. 
  • From 1997 to 2007, Mr. Varma had been a lead lawyer in the $1 billion racial discrimination class-action lawsuit brought by over 25,000 African-American farmers across 35 states– one of the largest civil rights class action settlements in U.S. history.
  • From 1999 to the present day, Mr. Varma serves as one of the class counsel lawyers on a national civil rights class action matter on behalf of Native American farmers and ranchers located on tribal reservations across the United States.  This case settled in 2011 for $760 million.
