Darryl Nirenberg, Chair of the firm’s Government Advocacy Practice Group, promotes and protects clients’ interests before the U.S. Congress, federal agencies, and the White House.

He is an expert in Senate legislative and parliamentary procedures and in developing and executing complex legislative and regulatory strategies. With a focus on clients engaged in consumer products and services, he advises and assists on issues involving international trade and domestic commerce, including agriculture, gaming, taxation, antitrust and homeland security.

Mr. Nirenberg joined Patton Boggs after serving more than a dozen years in senior legislative positions in the U.S. Senate, where he managed major domestic and foreign policy legislation. 

During his tenure in the Senate, Mr. Nirenberg served as Republican Counsel and Deputy Staff Director of the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, where he managed the Committee’s legislative activities, including reauthorizations of the Foreign Aid and State Authorization Acts, the Arms Export Control Act, and International Sanctions Legislation.

Mr. Nirenberg served as chief of staff to Senator Jesse Helms, where he was responsible for banking, financial and judicial issues. While attending law school at George Washington University, Mr. Nirenberg served as a Republican Professional Staff Member of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry, where he handled international agricultural and trade law issues, and authored the Food for Progress Program.

He is a member of the National Finance Committee for Romney for President, was involved in the Romney for President Campaign in 2007 and 2008, and served as counsel to the 2000 Republican Platform Committee and the 2001 Presidential Inaugural Committee. Mr. Nirenberg has appeared on Fox News and lectures frequently on parliamentary and legislative procedures. He is also an active member of the community, serving on the Board of the Northern Virginia Youth Hockey Club.

  • Involved in numerous high-profile legislative matters, including the enactment of legislation to effectively ban Roll-Your-Own tobacco machines; enactment of exemptions to the medical device tax provisions of the health care reform act; enactment of  The Fairness to Contact Lens Consumers Act; initiatives related to trade with China; Internet gaming; reform of, and implementation of domestic agricultural programs; tax treatment of real estate investment trusts and non-profit entities; and exploration of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
