John Byington is focused on helping Patton Boggs recruit premier legal talent in both the U.S. and abroad. A highly experienced legal executive, corporate development specialist and entrepreneur, Mr. Byington co-founded LegalLeaders, Inc., an executive search firm specializing in retained search for law firms seeking senior partners, practice groups and/or acquisitions.
Mr. Byington was part of the founding group of several organizations, including two communications companies, a microbrewery, a biotechnology company and an herbal products business. He is adept at designing and negotiating numerous corporate financings, mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, strategic investments and partnerships, as well as licensing and teaming agreements. Before starting LegalLeaders, Mr. Byington served as global leader of the legal practice group and managing partner of the Washington office for the executive search firm Page-Wheatcroft & Co.
Using his pharmaceutical background, Mr. Byington was president and chief executive officer of Synthecell/Vega Biomolecules Corporation, a company that produced customized DNA and peptide molecules for the research, diagnostic and therapeutic markets.
Mr. Byington practiced law for more than a decade in Washington, focusing on corporate and regulatory matters at both the federal and state level. He served as founding and managing partner in the Washington office of Detroit-based law firm Bushnell, Gage, Reizen & Byington and subsequently as Washington managing partner of the New York firm of Roger Hoge & Hills. Mr. Byington was the first non-energy partner to join the Washington office of Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro, which he helped grow from four lawyers to more than 50 lawyers.
In addition to his successful legal and business careers, Mr. Byington has extensive experience in the federal government. He was appointed by President Reagan to the Aviation Safety Commission in 1987, and before that, held the post of deputy special assistant to President Ford and deputy director of the Office of Consumer Affairs at the Department of Health and Human Services. President Ford appointed Mr. Byington chairman of the Consumer Product Safety Commission in 1976, a position he held for two years.
