John C. Camp, 81, a prominent Washington, D.C. lawyer and civic activist, died November 19, 2004, at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Maryland after a short illness.

Born in Arab, Alabama, September 23, 1923, John Clayton Camp began his law career as a sole practitioner in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and developed his practice into the prosperous corporate law firm Camp, Carmouche, Barsh, Hunter, Gray, Hoffman, Gill & Ensenat. The firm eventually grew to six offices, including one in Washington, D.C. In 1984 he moved to Washington permanently, eventually joining Patton Boggs, LLP, in 1994.

Mr. Camp represented clients in a variety of state and federal legislative programs, and served as general counsel to a number of individuals and corporations. From 1975-1980, he served as Counsel to the State of Louisiana, where he coordinated the state’s federal legislative, judicial, and administrative program, and represented the State before both the U.S. House and Senate. He also served as Special Counsel to the Governor on energy matters, as Assistant State Attorney General, and as Special Counsel to a number of state boards and agencies.

In addition to his expertise on domestic policy, Mr. Camp was well known for his skill in the areas of international economic and political affairs. He was appointed to a number of blue-ribbon boards and Presidential commissions involved in international economics. In 1979 he served as a member of the Presidential Trade Commission to the People’s Republic of China, and was actively involved with U.S. government leaders as a delegate to more than a dozen U.S.-European Roundtable Conferences during the 1980s. At the time of his death, Mr. Camp was Senior Counsel at Patton Boggs, LLP, where he focused on legislative and public policy matters. Most recently, Mr. Camp was the Senior Strategic Advisor to the Patton Boggs’ Executive Committee and in charge of the firm’s growth initiatives.

Active in civic affairs, Mr. Camp formerly held the following positions: Board Member and Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Meridian House International; Member of the George Washington University Medical Center Advisory Council; President of the Washington Area USO; and Executive Committee Board member of the Wolf Trap Foundation. He was a member of Congressional Country Club.

Mr. Camp attended Birmingham-Southern College and Auburn University. After a tour in the Army Air Corps during World War II, he attended Louisiana State University Law School, where he received his Law Degree in 1948.

Mr. Camp is survived by his wife of 60 years, Frances Spencer Camp; four children, John C. Camp, Jr. married to Joan Thibodeaux Camp, of Houston, Texas, Elizabeth Bower married to James A. Bower, Jr., of Irving, Texas, Martha Cox married to Dr. Russell J. Cox, of Gastonia, North Carolina, and Charles H. Camp married to Michelle Lebling Camp, of Rockville, Maryland; seven grandchildren, Clay Stephen Camp, Ross Spencer Camp, Meredith Bower Hatch, Susan Bower Burt, Matthew Gregory Cox, Captain Benjamin Gabriel Cox, Charles Henry Camp, Jr., and five great-grandchildren. He is survived by his sister, Mrs. Mary Jo Gordon of Birmingham, Alabama, and his brother Nelson H. Camp of Huntsville, Alabama. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Thaxton and Max Wayne Camp.
