Joseph Hopkins provides representation on litigation matters, individual and class actions, including those involving personal injury claims, consumer fraud claims, and other alleged torts such as Alien Tort Statute claims and toxic tort product liability claims). Mr. Hopkins also has handled numerous commercial litigations in state and federal courts.
Mr. Hopkins has prepared complex scientific, medical, liability and damages defenses relating to such issues as governmental and private entity immunities, dust and chemical exposures, gauge failures, reproductive endocrinology and pharmaceuticals, cancer pathology, economics relating to alleged loss of income, and the steel industry. He has defended major telecommunications companies, large construction companies and a wide range of manufacturers across a variety of industries.
Before joining the firm, Mr. Hopkins was of counsel in the litigation department at one of AmLaw’s top five law firms, where he served as office mentoring chairman and co-chair of the Advanced Controversy Curriculum Subcommittee and as a member of numerous committees, including the Finance Committee, Training and Career Enhancement Committee, Risk Mitigation Subcommittee and Recruiting Committee. He also has volunteered on a pro bono basis for the New Jersey Battered Women’s Shelter Legal Advocacy Project.
Representative Matters
- Oversight and management of the defense, in state and federal courts, of a large metropolitan municipality and more than 150 contractors and subcontractors regarding personal injury allegations related to rescue, recovery, debris removal and cleanup operations following a terrorist attack.
- Oversight and management of the defense of major telecommunications companies regarding consumer fraud allegations in class actions in state and federal courts.
- Oversight and management of the defense, in federal court, of an international automobile manufacturer regarding employment-related allegations.
- Oversight and management of the defense of a major chemical manufacturer in a state court action by an injured worker bringing failure-to-warn claims (settled during jury trial).
- Defense preparation for major chemical manufacturers regarding toxic tort products liability actions in federal court.
- Key responsibilities in the defense of a major pharmaceutical manufacturer regarding pharmaceutical product liability actions in state and federal courts in New York and Ohio involving hundreds of plaintiffs and hundreds of defendant pharmaceutical manufacturers and distributors.
- Defense of a private military contractor against claims of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity brought via the Alien Tort Statute.
- Obtaining of injunctive relief enjoining a raw materials processing corporation’s former executive from improper competition.
- Represented women on a pro bono basis to assist them in obtaining preliminary and final restraining orders against alleged batterers and in prosecuting civil contempt charges for violation of restraining orders.
