Jim Lewis protects and enforces clients’ intellectual property rights, often through litigation. His practice involves all phases of litigation, including counseling clients, discovery, depositions, Markman hearings, pretrial proceedings, trials and appeals. Mr. Lewis has successfully represented clients in federal courts throughout the country, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and several alternative dispute resolution forums. He also serves as monitoring counsel to U.S. corporations involved in European intellectual property litigation.

His patent litigation practice involves an array of technologies, including biotechnology, computer hardware, optical laser devices, medical and mechanical devices, biological and chemical decontamination devices, ingestible chemical compositions, nylon film products, adhesive technology,and computer software. He also litigates trademark matters from a variety of industries, including telecommunications, computer hardware and software, healthcare, gourmet foods and natural supplements and regularly represents clients in trademark opposition and cancellation proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB) of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Prior to joining Patton Boggs, Mr. Lewis was an associate with a Chicago litigation boutique firm where he litigated patent, trade secret, trademark, copyright and technical product liability matters. While obtaining his L.L.M. in Intellectual Property, he assisted in representing Harley-Davidson before the TTAB in several high-profile trademark opposition proceedings involving its exhaust sound trademark application.

Representative Matters:

  • Mr. Lewis is among a team of firm attorneys serving as trial counsel for one of the world’s largest medical technology companies in multiple mechanical and biotech patent litigations around the country.

  • Mr. Lewis successfully defended one of the world’s most famous weight loss trademarks in infringement litigation.

  • Mr. Lewis was selected as lead defense counsel in the largest domain name dispute in history.
