John A. Vassallo, III, concentrates his practice in environmental law and general litigation, including matters involving claims and legal requirements arising under the federal CERCLA and RCRA laws, as well as matters involving state environmental laws. Mr. Vassallo’s recent legal work in the environmental field includes representing the owner of a contaminated industrial site in a matter involving federal and state environmental law claims, which was successfully litigated through trial in the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey. He has also advised clients during high-stakes remedy selection negotiations with state and federal agencies concerning a large area of land historically operated as a mining site.

Before practicing law, Mr. Vassallo was an environmental compliance and enforcement officer in the state of New York, where he worked on regulatory permitting and compliance issues in the areas of water quality (Clean Water Act), solid waste management, municipal and non-municipal wastewater and public water supply treatment (Safe Drinking Water Act), and indoor and outdoor air pollution control (Clean Air Act). Prior to that work, Mr. Vassallo analyzed international commodities markets and fundamental economic indicators while working for a multi-billion dollar hedge fund.

During law school, Mr. Vassallo was the Research and Writing Editor of the Pace Environmental Law Review and was a Legal Intern for the Pace Environmental Litigation Clinic. Mr. Vassallo’s article, “Agency Inaction and the Regulatory Commons Theory: Lessons from New York State’s Experience with Dry Cleaner Co-Location,” was published in the Pace Environmental Law Review and was also published in the New York Environmental Lawyer, a publication of the NYSBA’s Environmental Law Section, after winning first place in the Section’s annual writing competition.
