Kristen Johnson assists clients on a number of international dispute resolution matters. Knowledgeable in both the domestic court system and international mechanisms for dispute resolution, Ms. Johnson is able to address client needs in unique cross-border matters. Her experience includes advocating for foreign entities within the U.S. courts and finding solutions through creative use of policy, public international law, arbitration and alternative dispute mechanisms. She also advocates for clients in the area of international human rights. Ms. Johnson has an active litigation practice ranging from intense discovery disputes to trial practice.
Ms. Johnson serves as an advisory council member of the Public International Law & Policy Group, where she formerly was a senior research associate, advising in peace negotiations in the Republic of Georgia and assisting the Anuak people of Ethiopia in local conflict resolution. Her knowledge of international affairs is further bolstered by her U.S. Fulbright Fellowship to Japan, where she focused on labor and civil rights for women.
Representative Matters:
- Sovereign representation including human rights compliance advice, Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act and Alien Tort Claims advice, representation before the United Nations, Congressional and State Department advocacy, and legislative drafting
- Successfully advocated for the release of a U.S. citizen wrongfully imprisoned overseas, including filing a complaint with the U.N. Human Rights Committee
- Drafted major financial and banking legislation and regulation guide for developing government
- Represents clients detained abroad to advocate for pretrial detention rights, recovery from prison abuses abroad, and handling of extradition requests, including resolution with domestic governments and international human rights tribunals
- Litigation management of intense discovery disputes and trial practice, including successful discovery efforts against a major social networking site, leading issues regarding the Stored Communications Act, and novel discovery procedures in California; co-counsel to successful contract, tort, and insurance coverage disputes
- Appellate work within the First and Fourth Circuits, including First Amendment issues and preservation of rights of a small business against an insurer
- Successful representation in numerous immigration matters, including winning asylum for a family from Nepal and porting an employment visa for a Kenyan asylum seeker
