New York foreign affairs advisor Ambassador Frank Wisner was interviewed by John Bussey of The Wall Street Journal’s “The Big Interview” on September 21, 2011. In the interview, Ambassador Wisner explains the political dynamics and the significance of the Palestinian Authority’s attempt to seek recognition as a state from the UN Security Council, calling it “potentially a hugely important moment,” and highlighting the vulnerability of the United States in the situation. “If there isn’t a clear path forward to negotiations,” says Ambassador Wisner, “we will in large be held accountable.” Still, he assures Bussey that the U.S., while vulnerable, is a “vitally important” power in the region with “cards to play.”
Ambassador Wisner also addresses post-Mubarak Egypt, asking what will define the “new” country, and touching on the role of Egypt’s military, the Muslim Brotherhood, and Egypt’s transitional government and people, and examines the peace between Egypt and Israel. On the question of Iran, Ambassador Wisner says the U.S. needs to clearly define its policy and what it hopes to accomplish by implementing that policy, and warns against a military option.
