WASHINGTON DC, January 24, 2013 – Tomás Solís, formerly an associate in the International Arbitration practice group at Dewey & LeBoeuf LLP, has joined Patton Boggs LLP. Resident in the firm’s Washington DC office, Mr. Solís joins Patton Boggs’ International Arbitration practice group as of counsel. His global perspective is derived from legal experience in the international offices of some of the world’s leading law firms, before international adjudicative bodies and from the study of international law and policy at the post-graduate level.
Mr. Solís joins Patton Boggs with substantial experience in international law, arbitration and mediation. He also advised sovereign governments around the world on boundary disputes.
Prior to joining Dewey & LeBoeuf, Mr. Solís spent five years as counsel to the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) in Washington DC. As secretary to arbitral tribunals, he administered a number of arbitral proceedings conducted in English, Spanish and French and involving countries in Latin America, Europe, Asia and Africa and initiated under investment treaties, contractual provisions and national law.
In another prior position, as a legal advisor to the Government of El Salvador, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Solís served on a team that represented El Salvador before the International Court of Justice, seeking revision of a judgment rendered in a land dispute with a neighboring government. Mr. Solís also served as a prosecutor in the Fraud and Assets Control units of the attorney general’s office of El Salvador.
“Tomás Solís is an exceptional addition to our extraordinary team in the areas of international arbitration and mediation” noted Edward J. Newberry, managing partner of Patton Boggs. “As Patton Boggs continues the expansion of our international capabilities—to meet the demands of an increasingly global economy—we look forward to the contributions of lawyers like Tomás. We are pleased to welcome him to the firm.”
Mr. Solís lectures and publishes frequently on matters related to international law and conflict resolution. As a visiting lawyer to the Paris offices of two global law firms, he conducted legal research on international law and arbitration and assisted in the preparation of treaty arbitration between private companies and sovereign governments. He is a member of the ICC, Latin American Group.
He earned his L.L.M., International Legal Studies, from Georgetown University Law Center and his Licenciado, a J.D. equivalent, from Universidad Doctor Jose Matias Delgados, El Salvador.
