JORDAN

Jordan’s government structure is a hereditary monarchy with a parliamentary system of government. The civil law is based on a combination of French and Egyptian law. Adjudication in Jordan is at four levels: the Magistrates Courts, the Courts of First Instance, the Courts of Appeal, and the Court of Cassation. These courts exercise jurisdiction in civil cases involving small claims. Courts of First Instance in the Kingdom exercise general jurisdiction in all matters, civil and criminal. There are three Courts of Appeal; the highest court is the Court of Cassation in Amman; its president, who is elected by the Judiciary Council, serves as the country's Chief Justice.

Jordan’s economy has shown significant growth within the last year following the implementation of the Free Trade Agreement with the United States and new Trade treaty with the European Union.  The Free Trade Agreement with the United States has increased Jordan’s exports to the United States to the extent that America is now the number-one importer of Jordanian products.

Investment Promotion Law now also grants generous and attractive incentives to national as well as international investors, such as exemption from custom duties, tax holidays, income tax exemptions and unrestricted transfer of capital and profits. Subject to minor procedural restrictions, foreigners are permitted to own real properties in Jordan. The investment law now stipulates that both Jordanian and non-Jordanian investors are treated equally.

Patton Boggs has extended its leading U.S. Federal Marketing and Government Contracts practice to companies operating in Jordan, both local and multinational, that seek to sell products and services to the U.S. Government, particularly for Iraqi reconstruction projects managed through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) mission in Jordan.
