Matthew Oresman helps multi-national corporations and sovereign governments navigate complex, cross-border policy and trade matters, representing client interests before government entities in the United States, Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Europe. Mr. Oresman uses his deep experience in international business to help companies achieve global investment objectives and overcome barriers to market access. He also counsels clients on international trade and sanctions matters, especially in connection with investigations by Congress and U.S. Government agencies.

Mr. Oresman has significant complimentary experience in international crisis management, and has worked on several high-profile matters of critical importance to corporate and sovereign clients. He has protected the interests of several U.S.-based companies facing the expropriation of their businesses by foreign governments, and has represented a number of multi-national companies under investigation for alleged violation of various U.S. sanctions.

Mr. Oresman also devotes significant time to pro bono work that leverages his international experience, including the delivery of assistance to meet the critical needs of foreign nations. For example, in recent years, he has successfully lobbied to improve the way the United States combats HIV/AIDS around the world.

From 2003 to 2005, Mr. Oresman served as director of the China-Eurasia Forum, a nonprofit research institute focusing on Chinese foreign policy. Previously, he worked as a research assistant at the Freeman Chair in China Studies, at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C. Mr. Oresman has also worked as a law clerk at the State Department’s Office of the Legal Advisor (2006) and the Senate Judiciary Committee (2005) during the nomination hearings of Chief Justice John Roberts and Associate Justice Samuel Alito. In addition, he served as a State Department intern at the U.S. Mission to NATO in Brussels (2001).

A graduate of Georgetown University Law Center, Mr. Oresman focused on international law and was a member of the Journal of International Law, the International Law Society, and the China Development Forum. Mr. Oresman’s international experience is bolstered by his studies at both Tsinghua University (2003-2004) and Fudan University (2000) in China.
