Patton Boggs Helps DC Appleseed Compile Anacostia River Revitalization Report
Patton Boggs pro bono client DC Appleseed recently released a detailed report assessing current efforts to restore the Anacostia River and providing recommendations to improve the restoration process.
The report, “A New Day for the Anacostia: A National Model for Urban River Revitalization,” was released on May 2, 2011, after two years of combined efforts by DC Appleseed, Patton Boggs and Covington & Burling. District officials, including Mayor Vincent Gray, Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, Prince Georges' County Executive Rushern Baker and Deputy Secretary of the Interior David Hayes gathered near the river to mark the report's release and voice their support. The initiative was lead by DC Appleseed’s Brooke DeRenzis and Patton Boggs’ DC partners Russ Randle and Scott Stewart; DC associates Elizabeth Gill, Anne Spiggle, Lesley Bowling Sachs, and staff attorney David Hain; and Anchorage associate Ben Ellison. Together, the Patton Boggs team contributed roughly 800 hours of work to the report’s creation and the effort overall.
In an effort to forge a consensus, the Patton Boggs team interviewed dozens of key stakeholders within the federal and local governments, in addition to area business leaders and environmental advocates, and compiled their recommendations to help rid the Anacostia of toxic sediments and stormwater pollution, and to help revitalize the river’s surrounding communities.
Since the report’s recent release, steps have already been taken to improve the river and to identify better ways to keep urban waterways clean, safe and accessible. The firm, along with other supporters of the initiative, including U.S. Congressman Steny Hoyer, was honored for its work by DC Appleseed at its Awards Dinner on May 10, 2011.
