Community Recognition

Pro Bono Community Recognition
Our pro bono program has been recognized locally and nationally—in 2003 and 2004, we were rated among the American Lawyer’s top 25 pro bono firms, and we are consistently ranked by the Washington Legal Times and Vault law firm surveys as one of Washington’s pro bono leaders.

Our volunteer attorneys and paralegals are frequently honored for outstanding pro bono achievements. Recently we have been recognized by the United Planning Organization, the Human Rights Initiative of North Texas (Angel of Freedom Award for political asylum and immigration work), the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights (public education advocacy), Mi Casa of Denver (affordable housing assistance), Texas C-Bar (Community Builder Award for transactional pro bono service), the National Capital Area Paralegal Association, and the Dallas Volunteer Attorney Program (Children’s Justice Project).

Patton Boggs Rallies by National Chamber Ensemble (NCE) to bring Harmony to DC
For the past two years, Patton Boggs has provided non-profit assistance and guidance to the nascent National Chamber Ensemble (“NCE”), Arlington, Virginia’s Ensemble in Residence. NCE seeks to provide affordable high-quality chamber music to the DC area and also seeks to create a strong feeling of community through its interactive performances. Over the summer, NCE participated in two free concerts, bringing its music to both long-time chamber music aficionados and first-time concertgoers. Attorneys Yost Conner and Neil Potts and Paralegal Rae Kligys have worked diligently to support NCE’s efforts.

Patton Boggs Qualifies for the D.C. Circuit Judicial Conference's "40 at 50"
We are pleased to announce that Patton Boggs qualified for the D.C. Circuit Judicial Conference's "40 at 50" breakfast recognition program.  The Judicial Conference's Standing Committee on Pro Bono Legal Services solicits information annually related to our pro bono program to determine if at least 40% of the attorneys in the D.C. office performed 50 or more hours of pro bono.  With our 2007 pro bono hours, we met and exceeded that standard (42%) and became one of only 20 firms to do so.

On April 8, the Judges of the Judicial Conference will host a breakfast reception for all the firms who met and exceeded the 40% goal, and the firm will be sending two representatives.

We would like to thank all of you who enabled us to meet this exciting goal.  Congratulations!  Your efforts are much appreciated.  Our work is not done, however; at the 2008 Breakfast, an announcement will be made concerning a new and higher standard for the future.  The Pro Bono Department is confident that we can rise to meet this new challenge with your help.

Patton Boggs Thanked for Service to Non-Profit Group Supporting Needy in Kenya
The Chancellor of the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill thanked Patton Boggs for the firm’s efforts in aiding Carolina for Kibera (CFK), a non-profit organization started by University of North Carolina graduates that runs a medical clinic, young girls’ reproductive center, waste management program, and youth sports association for over 5,000 members in the Kibera slum of Nairobi, Kenya.

The chancellor’s thank-you letter described the "...skillful and highly professional service of Melanie Gerber, George Schutzer, and associate Tim Glassco," singling out Mr. Glassco's efforts in managing the relationship between the firm and UNC, helping to organize a U.S. Senator's recent visit to CFK's Kenya offices, and coordinating a reception to launch a book of photographs published by the group, the proceeds of which went to a scholarship fund for girls in Kibera.

The firm has nurtured a close pro bono relationship with CFK since its creation in 2001.
