Read McCaffrey has been actively engaged in litigation for over 30 years and is a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. He began his trial attorney career as an assistant public defender for the State of Maryland. In 1973, he began his civil trial practice and developed an expertise in business and commercial disputes litigation, including construction litigation, professional malpractice litigation, complex product litigation involving multiple plaintiffs and defendants and the regional or national coordination of the interests of his clients, and complex banking and securities litigation.
Mr. McCaffrey has been the recipient of numerous professional honors, most recently the University of Baltimore School of Law’s 2005 Legacy of Excellence Award in Litigation, recognizing his “significant and enduring influence on litigation, both regionally and nationally.” He also received a commendation from Maryland Governor Robert Ehrlich in conjunction with the Award.
In the course of his career, he has participated in over 150 trials.
Representative Matters:
Served as lead counsel and strategic adviser for the world's first privately-operated and independently-regulated international financial centre, The Independent Financial Centre of the Americas in the Dominican Republic.
Several high-profile mass tort actions during the past ten years including the Chase, Maryland, Amtrak-Conrail crash; the Pan Am 103 Lockerbie Scotland disaster; and the litigation arising from the air disaster which claimed the life of Commerce Secretary Ron Brown.
Led trials of criminal and civil cases in state and federal courts in Maryland, the District of Columbia, New York, Virginia, Georgia, Florida, Missouri, Ohio, New Jersey, Delaware, North Carolina, Nevada, Oregon, Minnesota, and Texas.
