Practice Areas : Administrative and Regulatory

Since our founding in 1962, Patton Boggs has built its reputation representing clients in the areas where law, business and government intersect. Probably no aspect of managing this intersection is more important or complex than in the field of regulatory law, an area in which Patton Boggs excels. Our attorneys help our clients tackle regulatory matters—whether international, federal, state, or local—by understanding their businesses and partnering with them to find creative solutions to the complex challenges posed by governmental regulation.

Patton Boggs’ unique capability in administrative and regulatory affairs is based on four decades of on the ground experience not only practicing regulatory law, but also assisting in its creation.  Owing to the firm’s long tradition of public service, many of our colleagues have held important posts at the highest levels of government in both Republican and Democratic administrations. Our lawyers and other professionals have served at all federal levels—from Department Secretary to agency General Counsel to regulation writing. Patton Boggs attorneys know how government works.

This knowledge is backed by extraordinary skill in advocacy. At Patton Boggs, we understand that the regulatory process often holds opportunities. To that end, our attorneys have worked with administrators and lawmakers to develop innovative regulatory approaches, persuaded agencies to amend or re-interpret regulations, and convinced courts to interpret the regulatory implementation of laws in the way in which we believe Congress intended. Members of our regulatory practice appear before federal courts and government agencies thousands of times each year, representing the interests of domestic and international corporations, trade associations, nonprofit organizations, and individuals.

Patton Boggs’ Regulatory Law Practice includes a number of the firm’s core practice areas:
