Simon Schmidt, the resident partner of the firm’s Dubai office, advises clients on a range of commercial matters, including regulatory and compliance issues affecting foreign corporations, international business transactions and international investment in the Middle East region.
Mr. Schmidt’s regulatory work includes representing foreign corporations and financial services groups on regulatory and compliance issues in various jurisdictions in the Middle East. He also advises regional governmental bodies on the drafting of commercial legislation. His international transactional matters include cross-border mergers and acquisitions in the Middle East and the establishment of joint ventures in the region, while his investment work involves advising on the structuring of specialized investment products.
A member of the Patton Boggs Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Practice, Mr. Schmidt is based in the Middle East and has lived and worked in various locations, including Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Qatar and Lebanon. In addition to Patton Boggs, Mr. Schmidt practiced law in the corporate department of a major global law firm’s Dubai office and in the commercial department of the Isle of Man’s largest commercial law firm.
Previously, Mr. Schmidt established a fund management company in the Dubai International Financial Centre and acted as its chief operating officer and general counsel. In this capacity he assisted in the development of innovative fund structures, including the first real estate investment trust in the MENA region.
Mr Schmidt is qualified as a solicitor in the United Kingdom, an advocate in the Isle of Man and is also admitted to the Qatar Bar.
