William James, Paralegal Coordinator for the litigation department, is responsible for the day-to-day supervision and utilization of the paralegals in the Washington, D.C. office.  In addition to maintaining a significant caseload for various clients, Mr. James is also responsible for assessing workflow, staffing, recruiting, and training of new paralegals.

Mr. James confers with corporate personnel, management representatives, legal assistants, associates, and partners involved in a variety of complex litigation matters.  He researches and analyzes Superfund and Occupational Mine Safety and Health matters.  Mr. James has also served as lead paralegal in complex litigation, and as principle trial paralegal in various MSHA, OSHA, and NIOSH trials.

Mr. James routinely performs research, drafts memoranda, files documents, confirms citations, updates legal files, and maintains chronologies while assembling trial exhibits and assisting in trial proceedings and witness preparation.  Through the extension of this work, he also helps facilitate the expansion of minority-owned businesses into mainstream commerce.

In addition, Mr. James is an active member of the firm’s pro bono program.  In our partnership with Francis Jr. High School, he has been an Assistant Football Coach for Francis Jr. High for several years.  Mr. James has provided support to the tutoring program and has personally assisted with application and scholarship process for several students in their pursuit for admission to private higher education institutions.

Before joining the firm, Mr. James served as a contract criminal investigator with the District of Columbia’s Public Defenders Office.

Representative Matters:
  • Pittston Co. v. Allianz Ins. Co., 905 F. Supp. 1279 (D.N.J. 1995), reversed in part, 124 F.3d 508, 521 (3d Cir.1997): Assisted Lead counsel in complex, multiparty environmental insurance coverage litigation, which set national precedent on significant coverage issue.
  • Rwanda v. Rwanda Working Group, 227 F. Supp.2d 45 (D.D.C. 2002): Assisted Lead counsel in precedent setting litigation over scope of foreign country ambassador’ authority. See also Republic of Rwanda v. Uwimana (In re Uwimana), 274 F.3d 806, 811 (4th Cir.2001) (related bankruptcy case against former ambassador).
